Web Accessibility for People with Disabilities

📄 Project Abstract

The aim of this project is to examine the ways in which the Web has become increasingly inaccessible to people with disabilities, establish the ways in which these problems can be overcome, a nd to develop a demonstration of a software solution. I begin by reviewing the key issues and trends concerning Web accessibility and looking at the research which has been carried out in this area. Following from this I investigate the barriers which exi st for people with visual impairments, leading to a solution addressing the issues which concern these users. Through my research and development I investigate the ways in which a 'portal' site can offer an initial starting point for browsing; restructuring pages to make them accessible to assistive technologies such as screen readers. From these findings I draw conclusions on the future of Web accessibility and outline the possibilities for further research in this area.
