Virtual Environment for Low Level Buffer Overflow Attacks
📄 Project Abstract
This project aims to produce a safe virtual environment where stack-based buffer overflows get executed. Buffer overflows are a very well-known security problem in the computing industry. Surprisingly, the number of attacks reported each year caused by buffer overflows keeps growing. The purpose of this project is to deliver an educational piece of software that shows how these attacks get executed, what made them possible, and the consequences of such attacks. The project successfully implemented two virtual environments using VMware, one Linux virtual machine and one Windows virtual machine. The application developed using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and C# provides the guidance and the information necessary to successfully execute the attack. The use of Windows forms for the GUI makes this piece of software simple and easy to use. Users can supply their own attacks thanks to the plug-in feature of the application.
