Thyroid Gland Neoplasms: A Twenty Year Histopathological Review In Zaria, Nigeria

A twenty year histopathological review of thyroid gland neoplasms seen in the Department of Pathology, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria is discussed. Eighty three cases of thyroid gland neoplasms were studied and these formed 0.8% of all neoplasms during the study period. Malignant neoplasms constitute 53% while benign lesions formed 47% of cases studied. The male to female ratio of all thyroid neoplasms was 1:3.6 and a mean age of 36.1 years. The histopathological types of benign tumours encountered were follicular adenomas (94.9%) and teratomas (5.1%); they have a male to female ratio of 1:4.6 and a mean age of 29.5 years. The malignant tumours have a male to female ratio of 1:3 and a mean age of 41.7 years. The malignant histopathological types encountered were papillary carcinoma (70.5%), follicular carcinoma (15.9%), and three cases each of medullary and anaplastic carcinomas.
