📄 Project Abstract

The aim of this project is to extend on the work completed by Neill Rank in 2000. In particular, it will examine the segmentation of molar teeth in dental radiographs. The project concentrates on segmentation below the alveolar crest, since Rank identified this as the most difficult part of the problem. Since relatively little research time has been devoted to the segmentation of dental radiographs, there are many objectives which are to be achieved before a working system can be created. It wa s decided that the original objectives outlined in the mid -project report were too ambitious. The project instead concentrated on a smaller number of objectives, which it was hoped would allow greater progress with the overall problem. The first task was to conduct a literature review in the field of dental radiology with respect to dental imaging. Related work was examined, especially the work by Rank and Benn.
