Postpartum depression is the most prevalent postpartum mental health problem. Risk factors for postpartum depression include psychosocial stressors. One of these psychosocial stressors could be intimate partner violence. Postpartum depression is associated with early breastfeeding discontinuation, bonding impairment, thoughts of harming the baby, and constitutes huge burden on the family members and the society at large. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health issue in both developed and developing countries. Co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and postpartum depression is considered a deadly co morbidity because it can increase the risk of homicide and suicide. There is dearth of research on intimate partner violence and postpartum depression in Nigeria.
