📄 Project Abstract

The aim of this project is to evaluate the performance of TCP Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) under Random Early Detection (RED) Parameterization Tuning. ECN is achieved by setting a bit in the IP packet header as an indication of congestion so that the TCP can react accordingly. It allows an intermediate router to mark the packet which can notify the end hosts of the impending network congestion. The benefit of implementing ECN is the reduction of delay and packet loss during data transmissions, especially so for applications such as telnet, web browsing, and transfer of audio and video data that have low tolerance to delay or lost packets. ECN can be termed as an improvement over the Active Queue Management method: Random Early Detection where a packet is marked instead of being dropped. As such, this will avoid unnecessary packet drops, hence reduces delays from low-bandwidth delay-sensitive TCP connections such as telnet where the drop or loss of a single packet could result...
