The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing sector in the field of technology with many new devices coming to market on a regular basis. From smart thermostats, to fitness trackers, and even to the crazier things such as a smart salt shaker [1], we are seeing more and more appliances which are now including internet connectivity as part of their functionality, meaning that the number of devices connected on our home networks is increasing. With internet connectivity comes a whole new playing field for the products. Whilst appliances such as a thermostat already include computing functionality, when it becomes connected to the internet it begins to face a whole new set of potential issues, mainly of the security nature. This includes, but is not limited to, potential hackers being able to steal personal information or remote controlling/monitoring of a device; not to mention the fact that when a device is connected to a network, it will act as another "gateway".
