📄 Project Abstract

The preventive effect of dietary Cucurbita maxima fruit inclusion at 2.5%, 5% and 10% on colon carcinogenesis initiated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) induction for twelve (12) weeks was evaluated. Group A= Normal saline with standard feed, Group B= MNU with standard feed, Group C= MNU with dietary inclusion of 2.5% Cucurbita maxima powder, Group D= MNU with dietary inclusion of 5% Cucurbita maxima powder, Group E= MNU with dietary inclusion of 10% Cucurbita maxima powder, Group F= Dietary inclusion control normal saline with 10% Cucurbita maxima powder. After twelve (12) weeks of treatment, the colon and liver of rats undergoing MNU intoxication but fed Cucurbita maxima fruit included diets showed a significant (p<0.05) increase in the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes (catalase and superoxide dismutase) when compared with MNU control group.
