📄 Project Abstract

This project is concerned with a specific area of linguistics and natural language processing: alternations in grammatical construction, specifically the locative alternation and the ditransitive alternation, and the grammatical factors that affect which construction is chosen within those alternations. This project contains a review of background literature regarding previous studies on other alternations, and also other areas of linguistics and natural language processing relevant to the project. Also contained is detailed information regarding the generation of features whichmay influence the choice of alternation, the implementation of these features in the ICECUP IV tool (used with the British component of the ICE corpus), and an evaluation of the features and the ICECUP IV tool itself.
