📄 Project Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a system that can track the movements of a football from monocular digital video sequences. Manually analysing such footage is time consuming and monotonous. The project concentrates on the possible approaches to segmentation of the ball region as well as methods to determine the position of the ball in 2D screen space. A thorough literature review highlights the complications involved when tracking moving objects, such as varying illumination and segmentation of multiple moving objects. The benefits of such a system to automatically track the ball's position, such as real-time notification of events such as goals or even offsides, are also discussed. The development of a system capable of performing automatic tracking is then described with initial focus on the justification of important design issues.
