📄 Project Abstract

A polyester matrix was reinforced with chopped glass fibre, randomly arranged using hand-laying method for automobile application. Tensile properties, flexural strength, impact strength and hardness properties were determined for specimens with glass fibre contents varying between 32 and 45wt%. The maximum tensile strength obtained was 215MPa at 38wt% glass fibre content which was higher than the typical value for aluminium having 80MPa. The flexural strength was equally superior having the highest value of 420MPa at 40wt% glass fibre content which was better than that of mild steel having the value of 241MPa. The maximum impact strength of 220kJ/m2 was measured for glass fibre content of 38wt%, which appeared better than the reported value of 170kJ/m2 for commercial products. The best Brinell hardness value was 289kg/mm2 equivalent to 3.2 on Mohr scale which was better than the reported
