📄 Project Abstract

Typhoid fever, is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi. It is a common and sometimes fatal infection among children living in both developed and developing countries, especially countries in Asia and Africa (Crump et al., 2004). Appropriate treatment for typhoid fever is a clinical and public health challenge, with rising levels of drug resistance and limited evidence for use of newer agents. Typhoid fever caused by Salmonella serotype typhi or Salmonella serotype paratyphi remains endemic in many areas of the developing world, causing over 26 million infections and over 200,000 deaths annually (Crump et al., 2004). The incidence is highest in south-central Asia and South East Asia (over 100/100000 cases/year), with the highest burden of disease in children aged 2-15 years (Crump et al., 2004).
