Language has long been considered the exclusive domain of the human being. Indeed, it is considered a key trait of being human; no other species of animal possesses a communication system with such complex semantics and syntactical rules. Modern language research focuses not just upon the scientific discipline of linguistics, but over the last 40 years computational linguistics has gathered pace as a sub-domain of computer science [12]. Yet it has only been since the dawn of the internet that the idea of combining machine and natural language has boomed. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is now evident all around us; speech recognition systems, machine translation and intelligent data gathering systems being just a few examples of such technology.
