📄 Project Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the synergistic effect of fresh tomato and onion in alloxan-induced diabetic Rattus novergicus. Diabetes mellitus was induced in thirty five (35) rats out of a total of forty (40) adult rats using 120 mg/kg of alloxan monohydrate. Increasing dosages (5 ml/kg and 10 ml/kg) of fresh tomato and onion juice were given to the diabetic rats for 21 days while the control rats was only given normal saline (1 ml) and the standard control was given glibenclamide (5 mg/kg) during the same period. Blood glucose level, non-enzymatic antioxidant and enzymatic antioxidant were assessed with routine methods. F-LSD was employed to test significant differences (p < 0.05) among treatment means. Increasing dosages of fresh tomato and onion juice produced a dose-dependent significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the blood glucose levels and some of the pro-antioxidant indices. From the experimental findings, it is possible to conclude that fresh tomato and onion juice stud...
