The growing concern for the environment worldwide led to the United Nations Conference on Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972. The conference for the first time brought industrialized and developing countries together on the theme of sustainable development (The Global Peoples Forum, 2002). It was stated during the conference that education for the younger generation, as well as adults, is essential for the protection of the environment (Palmer and Neal, 1994). In 1975 the International Environmental Education Programme (IEEP) was launched in Belgrade. At the workshop, a comprehensive set of goals on environmental education was prepared. They include: *
