An Economic History Of Zaria Province Under Colonial Domination A Case Study Of Ikara District, 1907-1960

📄 Project Abstract

The main objective of this study is the examination of the colonial economy in Ikara District of Zaria Province. The period 1902 to 1960 is chosen to be the period covered by the study in order to examine activities and impacts of British colonial domination on the economy of Ikara District. The study examined the policies introduced by the British aimed at the distortion of the indigenous economy in order to serve British interests. We argued and demonstrated that this was done by imposing colonial policies on land, labour, production, transport and taxation as well as the land revenue proclamation and land and Native Rights Proclamation of 1906 and 1910. These policies had the effect of forcing peasants to engage in export cash crop production in order to meet the need of the colonial state.
