AN APPRAISAL OF THE PROPOSAL FOR ABUJA PUBLIC TRANSPORT INITIATIVE (ABUTRANS)

📄 Project Abstract

One of the most important reasons for the transfer of the seat of government from Lagos to Abuja was the problem of traffic congestion caused by prevalence of too many private cars. Lagos was congested and movement of vehicles was becoming a serious problem. In order to avoid the same mistake, measures were taken in the Abuja master plan to encourage the use of High capacity public modes of transportation. This was to discourage the use of private cars at peak period. But this dream was not translated into reality and so the problem of traffic congestion has manifested in F.C.T. This study examine an aspect of transport planning that is concerned with identifying the critical knowledge base required for improving travel mode choice from private to public Mass-transit modes in the FCT to ease the problem of traffic congestion.
