Conflict is an intrinsic and inevitable part of human existence. Accordingly, conflict has been described as a phenomenon that not only forms an important part of human existence but also constitutes a natural part of our daily lives (Weeks, 1992:20). The implication is that conflict constitutes an aspect of human interaction that involves the pursuit of incompatible objectives leading to hostile relationship. Armed conflict, on the other hand, is the use or resort to the use of force and armed violence in the pursuit of incompatible interests and goals by different groups (David, 2006:13). Since conflicts are intrinsic part of human existence, the concern is that effective measures should be put in place so that if conflict occurs it would not only be effectively managed but also as much as possible forestall its unnecessary destructive effects.
