📄 Project Abstract

Insomnia, a largely unrecognized and untreated disorder is associated with physical disorders, psychiatric disorders and mortality with resultant socioeconomic consequences. Its prevalence, correlates and impacts among Nigerian prison inmate population is unknown. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence of insomnia, identified its correlates, assessed the quality of life and determined the relationship between the diagnosis of insomnia and quality of life among male inmates of a Nigerian maximum security prison. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study design involving three hundred (300) male inmates of Ibara prison in Abeokuta, Ogun State (who did not have major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder) who were recruited by systematic sampling method and were evaluated, through face-to-face interviews, for insomnia with the use of Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry to diagnose insomnia and for quality of life by ...
