A Real Air Guitar

This project set out to create a system whereby a user could simulate the playing of a guitar and the relevant notes would be played back through the computer. The user's hands are tracked in real-time and their movements trigger output events depending on their location over a virtual template. An adaptive background subtraction routine is used to remove much of the un-interesting information from a scene, and the tracking function uses the HSV colour model to track skin tone across the guitar strings. The virtual instrument simulates real guitar play as closely as possible, including several unique features to this instrument. The system is robust to moderate changes in lighting, and allows universal use by initiating a skin tone model with a sample of the player's complexion. Performance is adequate to allow real-time processing, and the system's modular design and extensive commenting pave the way for possible future developments.
