ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine women empowerment and participation in economic activities as developmental tools in the society in Anambra State. It also examined sources of funds available for women in economic activities, the extent of women participation, major economic activities engaged by women, their constraints and strategies for enhancing women participation in economic activities. Survey research designs and copies of structured questionnaire were used for data collection. The questionnaires were administered to 405 women engaged in economic activities randomly selected through stratified random sample technique from 6 out of the 21 local government Areas of the state. 351 copies of the questionnaires were recovered and analyzed for the study. The study showed that farming, trading, craft, food processing, food vendor business, hair dressing, soap making, artisan work, transport business, livestock, fishery, poultry production, sewing and restaurant business were the major economic activities performed by women in Anambra State. Research findings also showed that sources of funds available for women in economic activities in the study area were personal savings, family and group contributions, cooperative societies, assistance from non-governmental organizations (NGO’s), philanthropist assistance, loan and credit from financial institutions and grants from state and national governments and international donor agencies. This study equally showed that rural women participation in transport business is very low and that education, skill acquisition, environmental sanitation, health promotion, water and food supply were the services provided by women in economic activities for the development of the society in the study area. This study revealed that factors inhibiting women empowerment were inability of government to empower women, corruption on the part of the government policy implementers, non-chalant attitude of women, lack of collateral, husband influence, illiteracy and household burden. This study showed significant difference between the mean responses of the urban and rural women on activities performed to generate income while there was no significant difference (P≥ 0.05) between the mean responses of urban and rural women on the strategies to enhance women participation in economic activities. This study findings also showed that the strategies for the enhancement of women participation in economic activities were provision of sustainable land tenure system and soft loan and credits, tax reduction on women in economic activities, training opportunities, funding, linkages to beneficiary organizations and market and encouragement for women to form corporative societies. Finally, recommendations were made on the ways of enhancing participation of women in economic activities in other to increase their participation and rate of contribution in societal development in the study area.
