ABSTRACT
Man as a gregarious animal is naturally predisposed to live in groups, such as hamlets, clans and villages. From the cradle to the Stone Age, man had sought to live and inter-relate with his fellows. Man as an embodiment of self and communal instinct to produce social existence and eke out a living, generates conflict and sometimes embark on war. The literary artist reflects man’s actions and inactions in his works, especially conflict which remains central to drama. Conflict has been the subject of investigation in political science, sociology, psychology and other human sciences. In the same token, literary critics have engaged in studying conflicts reflected in texts, hence this study. This study investigates war and its relates as dramatic conflicts using four selected Igbo plays, two each of A. B. Chukuezi and G. O. Onyekaqnwx. The study looks at types of conflicts, stages of conflicts and conflict resolution techniques adopted in the plays of study. Also considered includes ominous signs as conflict indicators or signals, conflict triggers, language of conflicts and character types explicated in the plays of study. The study uses the Marxist theory and the critical discourse analysis in its investigation. It is found that there are nine different conflict types in the plays under study. Also discovered is that the wars in the four plays, unfolded and advanced through the five stages of conflicts namely: emerging stage, escalating stage, most severe stage, de-escalating stage and rebuilding and reconciliation stage. Found also is that all the plays except one¬-Xwa Ntqqq (XN)- have conflict triggers and in terms of conflict resolution, four different techniques were seen. Finally it is found also that antagonists are mostly the bourgeoisies and are cast in the realist mould of character type. They tend to use more volatile and derogatory language on their addressees, while the protagonists are mostly proletariats and are cast in the idealist mould of character type. They tend to use less volatile language on their addressees.
