ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate teacher self-efficacy belief and control orientation as predictors of students’ interest and achievement in poetry in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria. Four research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted correlation survey design. The population of the study comprised 2,609 (SSII) Literature-in-English students and 59 literature-in-English teachers. A multi-stage stratified random sampling technique was adopted for selection of 341 respondents. Four instruments were used for data collection namely: Poetry Teacher Self-Efficacy Belief Inventory (TSEBI), Poetry Teacher Control Orientation Scale (PTCOS), Students Poetry Interest Rating Scale (SPIRS), and Students’ Achievement Score Proforma (SASP). The instruments were validated by five experts from Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Data collected were analysed using Mean, standard deviation and regression statistics while hypotheses were tested using analysis of that the relationship between teacher self-efficacy belief and students’ interest in poetry is positive, and the relationship between teacher self-efficacy belief and students’ achievement is also positive. The finding further showed that the relationship between teacher control orientation and students’ interest in poetry is positive; also there is positive The finding indicated that there is a significant relationship between teacher control orientation and students’ interest, and also a significant relationship between teacher control orientation and student’ achievement in poetry. One of the implications of the findings is that a low self-efficacious teacher and teacher with poor control orientation contribute to low students’ interest in poetry. Based on the findings the researcher recommended that teachers’ training colleges should include in their curriculum courses of the study that deal on teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs and control orientation. And students should be enlightened on how to build their interest through orientation
