ABSTRACT
This study was designed to develop strategies for improving students’ interest and achievement in History in Ebonyi North Education Zone. The study employed the descriptive design, using an historical survey. 400 students were chosen through simple random sampling of 20 schools. The instrument used for data collection was a twenty-five-item questionnaire titled, “Strategies for Improving Students’ Interest and Achievement in History” (SISIAH).Mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the five research questions posed for the study. The t-test statistics was used to test the two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. On the main, it was discovered that the National Policy on Education, first published in 1977 with the latest (4th edition) (2004), is the chief cause of students’ declining interest and achievement in History. Other findings were that History is still relevant to our national development inspite of the prospects of science and technology. It was also found that repositioning the History teacher, making history lessons interesting and pruning the History syllabus are critical strategies for improving students’ interest and achievement in History.
