STRATEGIES FOR COPING WITH YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT IN OBOLLO-AFOR EDUCATION ZONE OF ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT

 This study was carried out to examine the coping strategies of youth unemployment in Obollo-Afor Education Zone of Enugu State. It also examined the causes of youth unemployment, consequences of youth unemployment, and the strategies for curbing youth unemployment. The study also suggested the coping strategies necessary for the unemployed youths. Descriptive research design was used for the study. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaires were administered to 250 respondents which included teachers, government and the unemployed youths. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample the respondents. 237 questionnaires were recovered and analyzed for the study. The findings of the study reveal that economic meltdown, employment embargo, lack of employable skills, inappropriate school curricular and automation are the causes of youth unemployment. The findings of the study reveal that poverty, armed robbery, kidnapping, prostitution, corruption, illness, human trafficking, frustration, political thuggery and drug abuse/addiction are consequences of youth unemployment. The study also reveals that the strategies for curbing youth unemployment are privatization, steady power supply, lifting embargo on employment, emphasis on education for self employment, funding the National Directorate of Employment programme and provision of micro credit scheme to aid the youths start their own business. The findings of this study also reveals that the strategies necessary for the unemployed youths are participating in NDE programme, learning marketable skills like computer operation and motor mechanics, borrowing from bank to establish small scale industry and getting financial assistance from religious organization. Finally, recommendations were made on the coping strategies of youth unemployment inorder to help the unemployed youths to cope with unemployment in the study area.
