SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AS CORRELATES OF PARENTAL BULLYING BY IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS IN LAGOS STATE.

ABSTRACT 

The study investigated the socio psychological and demographic variables as predictors of parental bullying by in- school adolescents in Lagos state. The study in its content covered the extent to which the physical and verbal bullying, socio-psychological and demographic variables relate to parental bullying by in-school adolescents. Six research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The review of literature was conducted under conceptual, theoretical and empirical framework of the study. The study employed the correlational research design. The population of the study constitutes all the in-school adolescents in Lagos State who are parental bullies. Nine hundred (900) in-school adolescents who were purposively selected from the six educational zones in the state were used as sample for the study. Questionnaire titled socio-psychological and demographic variables as correlates of parental bullying by in-school adolescents which was validated by three experts was used for data collection. Cronbach Alpha statistics was used in computing data collected and reliability coefficients of .97 for parenting style, .74 for family climate, .69 for social economic status, .89 for family size and .60 for age of parents were got. Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient was used to answer the research questions while Multiple Regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.5 level of significance. The findings can be summarized as follows: socio- psychological variables such as parenting styles, family climate and socio-economic status predict parental bullying by in-school adolescents; demographic variables such as family size and age of the parents predict parental bullying by in-school adolescents. Based on the findings some recommendations were made and some other areas were suggested for further studies.
