ABSTRACT
This study investigated sexual promiscuity among adolescents and its counselling implications in Nsukka Education zone of Enugu State. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study and two hypotheses. The population of the study consisted of 300 adolescents drawn from four secondary schools in Nsukka Education zone using stratified random sampling technique. Questionnaire was the instrument for data collection while the data collected were analyzed using mean ( x ) score. In testing the hypotheses, t-test statistics was adopted. Based on the analysis, the following major findings emanated from the study.
That what constitute sexual promiscuity among adolescents are indiscriminate engagement in sexual acts, keeping many sex partners for the love of it, taking part in sexual acts as societal norms.
The causes of sexual promiscuity among adolescents are negative peer group influence, lack of self control, early exposure to pornography, ignorance of the negative effects of sexual promiscuity and wrong parenting style as shown from the study.
The findings also revealed that sexual promiscuity among adolescents has counselling implication which included self devaluation, promotion of drop-out of adolescents from secondary schools, depressions, distractions from important personal goals and truancy.
Besides, the findings also revealed the problems that are associated with sexual promiscuity as the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, illegal abortion among female adolescents, unwanted pregnancies and increase in the death rate among adolescents.
The findings also showed that counsellors organize seminars to discuss the negative effects of sexual promiscuity, that counsellors pass relevant information about sex to adolescents during morning assembly, that counsellors paste relevant photographs at the bulletin board to show the damaging effects of sexual promiscuity and that counsellors educate the adolescents on the dangers of pre-marital sex. Recommendations, educational implications and suggestions for further studies were made by the researcher.
