SEXUAL HARASSMENTS AS CORRELATE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS AMONG UNDERGRADUATES OF STATE UNIVERSITIES IN ENUGU AND EBONYI STATES

ABSTRACT

This study sought to determine sexual harassment as correlate of psychological and academic adjustments of undergraduates in state universities in Enugu and Ebonyi States. Based on the purposes of the study, eight research questions guided the study while five null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. A correlational research design was used for the study and a multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted to compose a sample of 614 undergraduates. An instrument, a structured questionnaire titled, “Sexual harassment, psychological and academic adjustments questionnaire” (SHPAAQ) was used to collect data from the respondents. Using Cronbach Alpha, the internal consistency reliability coefficient were determined for the questionnaire and the values yielded 0.83, 0.88 and 0.87 for sexual harassment, psychological and academic adjustments respectively. The data collected were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment correlation as well as regression analysis. t-test statistical techniques for testing a significant differences as well as multiple regression analysis were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis of the data yielded the following results; There was a moderate degree of sexual harassment among undergraduates. The levels of psychological and academic adjustments of undergraduates were low. The relationship between sexual harassment and psychological adjustment of undergraduates was negative, so also the relationship between sexual harassment and academic adjustment. However, the relationship among sexual harassment, psychological and academic adjustments of university undergraduates was significantly high. It was also revealed that based on academic levels, significant differences existed between sexual harassment and psychological adjustment of undergraduates. Furthermore, there was a significant difference between sexual harassment and academic adjustment of undergraduates based on gender. These findings were orderly and extensively discussed, their educational implications as well as recommendations highlighted. A recommendation among others is that curricular at basic levels be modified to accommodate intervention measures through functional counselling units made available by Universities. This curricular modification could assist students battling with experiences of sexual harassment as well as wishing to settle adjustment problems. Subsequently, suggestions for further studies and limitations of the study were also given.
