ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between the principals’ demographic characteristics and organizational effectiveness in secondary schools. The study was guided by the following research questions: (a) What is the organizational effectiveness of principals in secondary schools? (b) To what extent do the principals demographic characteristics, (gender, age, marital status, administrative experience and educational qualification) relate to organizational effectiveness in communication? (c) To what extent do the principals demographic characteristics, (gender, age, marital status, administrative experience and educational qualification) relate to organizational effectiveness in decision making? (d) To what extent do the principals demographic characteristics (gender, age, marital status, administrative experience and educational qualification) relate to organizational effectiveness in motivation? (e) What is the relationship between the principals demographic characteristics (gender, age, marital status, administrative experience and educational qualification) relate to organizational effectiveness in disciplinary measure? Results also indicate substantial relationship between some principals’ demographic characteristics and organizational effectiveness in terms of communication, decision making, motivation and disciplinary measures. The results further revealed that of all the demographic variables (Age, Qualification and experiences as vice principal) only the experience as a vice principal has significant relationship with principals overall organizational effectiveness (t = 3.338, Five hypotheses were also posed. The sample consisted of 100 principals selected by myth-stage sampling procedure. Nine hundred teachers responded to the principals’ organizational effectiveness questionnaire.
