RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ADMINISTRATIVE OBSTACLES AND JOB PERFORMANCE OF HEADS OF DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTH-SOUTH, NIGERIA

Abstract 

The study examined the relationship between administrative obstacles and job performance of heads of department of universities in the south-south, Nigeria. Six research questions were formulated to guide the study while six null hypotheses were formulated and tested at the probability of 0.05level of significance. Correlational survey design was adopted for the study. A structured questionnaire was developed and used for data collection. The population of the study comprised 331 heads of department and were all used for the study. The entire population size was used as sample of the study. The research instrument was face validated by two experts in educational administration and planning, department of educational foundations and one expert in measurement and evaluation, department of science education both in university of Nigeria, Nsukka. Cronbach Alpha reliability was used to test for internal consistency. The overall internal consistency yielded 0.80. Pearson’s product moment correlations coefficient was used to answer the six research questions while multiple regression analysis was used to test null hypotheses. The results of the study revealed that, there was a significant relationship between role task analysis and job performance among heads of department. There was a significant relationship between Job analysis and job performance among heads of department. There was a significant correlation between the Heads of Department relationship with staff and job performance. There was a significant relationship between Organizational Structure and job performance among heads of department. There was a significant relationship between physical facilities and job performance among heads of department. The administrative obstacles of male and female heads of department correlated significantly with their job performance. Some of the recommendations for the study included that the roles of heads of department of universities should be properly defined, Heads of department should establish “HOD” support group. The NUC and universities management should organize stress management workshop for heads of department among others.
