PREVALENCE OF CHILD ABUSE AMONG PUPILS IN ALMAJIRI SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN ZARIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

 This study was on the prevalence of child abuse among pupils in Almajiri system of education in Zaria Local Government, Kaduna state. The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of child abuse in Almajiri system of education. The specific objectives of the study were to: Access the prevalence of physical child abuse among pupils in Almajiri system of education, determine the prevalence of child sexual abuse among pupils in Almajiri system of education, to access the prevalence of psychological child abuse among pupils in Almajiri system of education; to access the prevalence of child neglect and also to assess if there are differences in the prevalence of child abuse, based on the demographic characteristics of the children. A sample size of 442 respondents were used through simple random sampling technique. Data was obtained using questionnaire which served as an interview guide with a reliability co-efficient of 0.78. Statistical analysis of the data generated was done using simple descriptive data analysis. Independent t-test and analysis of variance was used to determine the significant differences between the variables of the research hypothesis and all statistical procedure were done using SPSS package. The finding of the study showed that 74.4% of the pupils in Almajiri system of education experienced physical child abuse. 81.7% experienced psychological child abuse, 21.5% experienced child sexual abuse, and 58.4% experienced child neglect. There was significant differences between the children’s age and the prevalence of child abuse in Almajiri system of education. There was a significant difference between the level of education of the children and prevalence of child abuse in Almajiri system of education. The researcher therefore, recommended that corporal punishment such as flogging should be discouraged, the school environment should be made more convenient and conducive for learning and parents of the pupils in Almajiri system of education should be encouraged to visit their children regularly and provide their necessary daily needs for their children in Almajiri system of education.
