Abstract
This study sought to examine pre-retirement preparations as correlates of social and economic adjustment of teacher retirees in Enugu State. Six research questions and five hypotheses were generated to guide the study. The design of the study was a correlational survey. The sample consisted of 800 teacher retirees from primary and secondary schools in Enugu State. The instrument used for the study was questionnaire. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test were used to analyse the data collected. The major findings of the study are that: None of the teacher retirees opened a savings account, invested in shares and bonds for economic preparations for their retirement. Very few of them engaged in other business activities for their survival, About fifty percent of the teacher retirees made social preparations for their retirement, There is a significant positive relationship between pre-retirement preparations, social and economic adjustment of teacher retirees in Enugu State. 4. Gender, location and status have no significant influence on pre-retirement preparations, social and economic adjustment of teacher retirees in Enugu State. Among the recommendations made were: The pre-retirement preparations should start as soon as an individual starts to work whether as an employee or self-employed. The pre-retirement preparations should cover both social and economic preparations to ensure comfortable adjustment during retirement. Government should improve the condition of service of teachers by paying their salaries and other allowances as and when due to enable them embark on pre-retirement preparations as early as possible. Major implications of the findings and suggestions for further research were highlighted.
