POVERTY ALLEVIATION STRATEGIES FOR EMPOWERING RURAL WOMEN IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE OF ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT

 The research was carried on “Poverty Alleviation Strategies for Empowering Rural Women in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State”. A Focus Group Discussion guide was developed by the researcher to elicit information from the rural women within the area of the study. The focus group discussion guide was formulated based on five research questions that guided the study. Information gathered from the respondents revealed that the rural women suffer a lot in the hands of poverty which has led to a lot of deprivations on the women. Poverty to these rural women has led to their inability to satisfy their basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. Also, the respondents revealed that they also suffer from political, economic and social deprivations. This according to the respondents have resulted to lack of access to medical facilities and health care, lack of education, lack of incentives for borrowing money from the bank to engage in meaningful business or agricultural production. Also, the rural women were victims of early marriage in their rural areas. Furthermore, it was found out that the rural women have problem of high infant mortality caused by poor health facilities in the rural areas. The findings also show that the women can uplift their standard of living if they enroll in Adult Education programmes, modern health facilities are provided in their local areas, soft loans are given to them so as to help them send their children to schools, engage in petty trading and agricultural activities. They believe also that their lives will change if they are allowed to make decisions in the family and if they are allowed to form women co-operatives which they can organize and learn certain skills and training that will enable them earn a little money for their lives. The researcher based on the findings made useful suggestions and recommendations on how best to alleviate the poverty among rural women in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State.
