PERSONAL FACTORS AS CORRELATES OF ADJUSTEMENT PATTERNS OF DIVORCEES IN ENUGU STATE

Abstract

The study sought to investigate personal factors as correlates of adjustment patterns of divorcees in Enugu State. In pursuance of the aforementioned objectives, six research questions were asked and seven hypotheses postulated. Subjects for the study consisted of 500 divorcees including males and females drawn from eighteen communities in Enugu State. A multiple stage random sampling technique was adopted in composing the sample. During the first stage the researcher randomly sampled three local government areas from each of senatorial zones of the state totalling nine local government areas. The next stage involved random sampling of two communities from each of the sampled nine local government areas totaling eighteen communities. Finally, the researcher adopted stratified proportionate random sampling in composing the sample. A correlational survey research design was adopted for the study. Two instruments were used for data collection: Divorcees Personal Factors Questionnaire and Divorcees Adjustment Rating Scale. The instruments were validated by six experts from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The six research questions and six hypotheses were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Co-efficient while multiple regression analysis was adopted to test hypothesis seven. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings show that there are positive relationships between the six personal factors of divorcees and their adjustment patterns and that there are positive significant relationships between the divorcees’ personal factors and divorcees’ adjustment patterns in the postulated hypotheses. In testing hypothesis seven, it was found that only level of education and length of marriage made a significant difference and thus are the dominant variables in accounting for the adjustment of divorcees. Based on the findings, recommendations were made.
