PERSONA-SOCIO COUNSELLING NEED AND PEER INFLUENCE AS CORRELATES OF POLITICAL BEHAVIOUR AMONG IN-SCHOOL YOUTHS IN DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

Youths have been used by politicians to perpetuate negative political behaviours such as snatching of ballot boxes, thuggery and rigging of elections in Delta State for a little token at the detriment of their education and with a reasonable number losing their lives and also a greater number losing educational focus. Speculations have been made to the effect that many of these youths appear not to be guided properly in terms of counselling and that arising from this, they fall under the influence of their peers. To this effect therefore, this study investigated persona-socio counselling need and peer influence as correlates of political behaviour among in-school youths in Delta state. The study is guided by five research questions and two hypotheses. The population of the study consisted of all the youths in secondary schools in Delta state numbering 513,163. Sampling procedure involving stratified random techniques was adopted to compose a sample of 1200 in-school youths. The instrument used for data collection was a 45-item questionnaire on persona-socio counselling need, peer influence and political behaviour. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire titled: persona-socio-counselling need, peer influence and political behaviour questionnaire (PPPQ). The validity and reliability of the instrument were established. For validity the researcher used face and construct validation and further subjected the items to item analysis. Internal consistency of the items was established using Pearson’s product movement correlation procedure while Test Retest procedure was used to assess the stability of the instrument. The data obtained were analyzed using frequencies means and correlation analyses. The t-test and regression statistics were used in testing the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed among others that: Gap exists in area of persona-socio counselling need among in-school youths in Delta State. Peer influence among the youths in the area is in the negative dimension. There is a fairly positive relationship between political behaviour and persona-socio counselling need of in-school youths in Delta State. There is positive and strong relationship between peer influence and political behaviour. Based on the findings, implications were highlighted among which is that the political behaviour of the youths could snowball into a full-fledged crisis. On account of this, the researcher recommends that counsellors should organize moral counselling which should target reorientation of the public in general and the youths in particular on the need to shun violence and reverence daily living.
