ABSTRACT
The increasing rate of family instability such as the incidence of divorce in the society justifies the fact that there are conflicts in matrimonial homes. Conflict is inevitable in marriage because couples have differing ideas, preferences or favoured activities. Effective utilization of conflict resolution strategies by the couples can lead to marriage stability. The purpose of this study was to investigate marital conflicts and utilization of conflict resolution strategies by couples in Nnewi Education Zone of Anambra State. Four research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive Survey design was employed by the researcher to investigate marital conflict and utilization of conflict resolution strategies by couples In Nnewi Education Zone. A total number of 1200 (one thousand two hundred) couples were sampled by means of proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a researcher developed questionnaire designed to elicit information from respondents. Data were analysed using calculated mean and z-test. The findings indicated that there are forms of marital conflicts experienced by couples. Some conflict resolution strategies were frequently and highly utilized by couples in resolving their conflict because it was effective in helping them resolve their marital conflicts. Based on the pleasant result of using some conflict resolution strategies, couples are encouraged to utilize those conflict resolution strategies that bring positive result in their marital homes. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the researcher.
