INTRODUCTION
1.1: Background to the Study
Employees occupy a very strategic place in..,an organization because
. ¬
of their centrality to the production processes.
They contribute a very indefinable role both in the achievement of
various organization goals and objectives as well as the government
economic programmes.
However, for employees to perform their crucial role effectively and
efficiently, there must exist a. very strong cordial relationship
between the employer and employees of such organization. Conflict
in an organization is inevitable. It is the discord that occurs when
the goals, interest or values of different individuals or groups block
or frustrate each other attempt to achieve their objectives.
Baashaw (1998) states that conflicts are a fact of life. In
organization as well as other area of life, as people compete for jobs,

resources, power, acknowledgement and security, dealing with it is
difficult because it arouses primitive emotions such as people
feeling threatened.
1
It is part of organizational life since the goals of different
stakeholders such as managers and staffs are often incompatible.
(Jones et al, 2000).
However, managing conflict in the public sector organization is
...
dedicated primarily to determine how grievance can be managed in
the workplace, to ensure harmonious labour management relations
and enhance productivity to know the correlation between
industrial conflict and employer-employees relationship and also to
investigate critically the effect of industrial conflict on employee's
performance and the achievement of the overall objective of the
organization.
In the light of the above brief analysis, this study is to attempt
to look at the various effect and influence of conflict on the public
sector organisations. A critical look is taken at the Nigerian National'
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in the countIy, on the importance of
managing conflicts which had a greater positive effect in the
organisation. The development of the use of conflict management
techniques however has improved the labour-management relations
and enhance productivity thereby strengthening industrial
democracy.

However, conflict in an organization is an inherent aspect of
managing. Thus .it has become indispensable in an organization for
managing conflicts.
