ABSTRACT
The general purpose of this study was to investigate the management problems of post-primary school administrators in Kogi East, Kogi State. Six research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and its population consisted of 2525 subjects, comprising 125 principals and 2,400 teachers in the 125 post-primary schools in Kogi East. The sample of the study was 265 subjects, comprising 25 principals and 240 teachers that were selected through proportionate stratified random sampling technique. A 39-item questionnaire was the instrument developed by the researcher and used to collect the required data for the study. This instrument was validated by five experts and tested for validity using the Cronbach’s Alpha method. The data collected from the respondents were analyzed using means, standard deviations and t-test statistic. Some major findings of the study were that the planning problems of Post-Primary school Administrators in Kogi East are unreliable and inaccurate statistical data for planning activities, poor decision making, inadequate planning facilities and political interference and instability. The financial management problems of the post-primary school administrators here are poor allocation of funds to schools, lack of prudence in financial management in post-primary schools, and over-dependence of schools on government’s sources of funds; while the personnel management problems of post-primary school administrators are lack of qualified staff in schools, insufficient training of post-primary school administrators in personnel management, indiscipline among staff, poor student participation in school management, poor staff participation in school management and poor orientation of new staff, among others. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations were made and the implications of the findings as well as the limitations of the study were highlighted and then suggestions for further research were made.
