The problem of students’ hostel accommodation has remained always a crucial educational issue. This is because it is at the centre of the success of any academic endeavour for teaching and learning to effectively take place the students housing must be guaranteed. This informed the present study: management of student’s hostel accommodation problems in federal polytechnics in South East Nigeria, the purpose of which was to investigate the management of student’s hostel accommodation problems in federal polytechnics in South East Nigeria. Five research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A 63-item questionnaire were developed and administered to 811 respondents comprising 55 staff and 756 students in the four polytechnics in South East Nigeria. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to analyse data collected while the t-test statistics was used to test the two null hypotheses. The study among other things, found out the students’ hostels were overcrowded and there is pressure on existing facilities. The hostels are dirty, untidy and the environment bushy. The factors responsible for the problem include: increase in the students enrolment without proportionate increase in students’ hostels, poor funding of education by the government, lack of maintenance culture, mismanagement of funds by the authorities and non involvement of private sector in the provision of hostel accommodation. The impact of the problems on the students include: poor academic performance, lateness of students to lectures as a result of long queues in the morning for toilets, creates frustration in students, encourage anti-social behaviours such as theft, rape, secret cult among students encourages sexual recklessness among student d and encourages unethical practices like selling of spaces by students. Some strategies that could be adopted to improve on the management of students’ hostel accommodation problems include: the government giving special grants to federal polytechnics for the provision of hostels and the requisite facilities, appealing to individuals and corporate bodies to help in the provision of students’ hostels and facilities, employing casual workers to ensure that the hostels were kept clean and regular monitoring and supervision by the authorities. Based on the findings, the educational implications were drawn and the following recommendation among others were made: the federal polytechnics in the South East should be adequately funded, the private sector should be encouraged to participate actively in the provision of students’ hostels, talks and seminars should be organised from regularly to enlighten students on how best to make use of the facilities.
