ABSTRACT
This research seeks to find out which language is actually used for instruction in the new 9-year Basic Education in Anambra State. It explored the language situation and teaching of various languages in the State. Library research as well as interviews and observations were made to help the researcher have a clear understanding of what is really obtainable in the schools. Teachers in Urban and rural schools (Basic 1-9), curriculum designers and language examiners from Anambra State Post-Primary Schools Services Commission and the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board were used as the research population. A total of sixty-nine (69) respondents were randomly selected for interview. Also, actual classroom observation on the language of instruction was carried out. The results were analyzed, and it was found out that the majority of the teachers do not practice the recommendations on the National Policy on Education. Based on the findings, the researcher made recommendations and suggested areas for further research. This is aimed at helping to bring about uniformity in teaching of English Language as the medium of instruction in various school in Anambra State.
