ABSTRACT
This research work investigates language and the social construction of women by men in Tiv traditional bridal songs to ascertain their effects in characterising the image of women in Tiv speech community. It analyzes Tiv traditional bridal songs as discourse forms. With the aid of a recorder, the researcher is able to put together Tiv traditional bridal songs for the study. The theoretical framework for the data analysis is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).The research basically looks at how Tiv culture, through traditional bridal songs play out the power game of male dominance over the woman, using some aspects of CDA such as dominance, oppression, suppression, mind control and social inequality. The findings show that there is the enforcement of negative traditional ideology and power on the women by the use of these songs through the manipulative use of language. The study indicates that the bridal songs composed by the men show evidence of oppression, dominance, mind control, suppression and social inequality. Additionally, these songs tend to demean and constantly keep the women down, making the women useful only in an inferior capacity against their male counterpart revealing male struggle for power. This study recommends a change in the way men view the women as mirrored in Tiv traditional bridal songs and help free women from predetermined negative image. The study suggests that more researches should be carried out in this regard to further analyse the social construction of the men by the women.
