ABSTRACT
Motivation is of fundamental importance in the management employees because it is generally believed that well motivated employees usually produce optimally. To influence employee performance, appropriate techniques of motivation must be put in place in the work place. The study examined perceived job-related motivators among nurses in two selected tertiary institutions in Rivers State that influence their performance. Four objectives and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A correlation cross-sectional design was adopted for the study. The study population consisted of all registered nurses in the two selected hospitals. A sample of two hundred and thirty–nine (239) nurses was used. Instrument for data collection was a self–developed questionnaire by the researcher in a modified 4 point Likert scale. Data were analysed using frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The hypotheses were tested using ANOVA at 0.05 level of significance. Findings, revealed that nurses in the two hospitals perceived promotion, payment of salaries and allowances, recognition of work done and personal accomplishment as job related motivators. Educational level of nurses and years of experience had a significant difference with perceived job motivators. There was no significant difference between rank of nurses, and perceived job related factors in the two hospitals. Based on the findings the identified job related factors should be strengthened in the two hospitals to enable, nurses perform to their optimum. Nurses with higher education should be motivated to enable them perform better.
