IMPROVING SUPERVISION OF INSTRUCTION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE OF ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT

 This study focused on improving Supervision of Instruction in Secondary Schools in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State. The mean and standard deviation were used to answer three research questions formulated to guide the study. The two null hypotheses formulated for the study were tested with t-test statistic. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A random sample technique was used to obtain information from a total of 234 respondents who were used as subjects for the study with 26-item questionnaire. The findings of the research study shows that the supervisory practices are not properly used by supervisors in secondary schools, school were not visited regularly to watch the students and teachers in “action”. Other supervisory practices such as post-supervision conferences, inter-school visitations between teachers, observation of classroom instruction of teachers are not adequately employed. The findings of this research study shows that the problems facing supervision of instruction in Nsukka Education Zone are: inadequate transportation facilities, the fewness of the supervisors, teachers negative perception of supervision of instruction, time constraints among other identified problems. the findings also shows that the measures for improving effective supervision of instruction in the Zone are: the use of internal supervisory committees in the school, the use of supervisors report as basis for teacher’s promotion, the organization of pre and post-supervision conferences, the organization of workshops/seminars on modern supervisory skills for the school supervisors, motivation of supervisor among other measures identified. There was no significant difference between the mean opinions of internal and external supervisors on the major problems and measures for improving supervision of instruction in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State.
