EXTENT OF STUDENTS’ PARTICIPATION IN DECISION-MAKING PROCESS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS ADMINISTRATION IN NSUKKA EDUCATION ZONE

ABSTRACT 

This study was aimed at investigating the Extent of Students’ Participation in Decision-Making Process for Secondary School Administration in Nsukka Education Zone. In pursuance of the aforementioned objectives, five research questions were developed and one null hypothesis postulated. Subject for the study consisted 220 students and 52 principals. The 220 students were drawn through Stratified Random Sampling and the entire principals were used. The research questions were analyzed using Mean Score while the null hypothesis was tested using t-test statistics. The result showed that: 1. The students did not participate in the planning of scheme of work for the schools, preparing the time-table, subjects’ allocation, timing and conduct of school internal examination. 2. The students were involved in the election of school functionaries such as School Prefects, House Prefects, Games Prefects, election of students into various committees and allocation of duties and responsibilities to students but not to a very great extent. 3. They were also involved in disciplinary matters such as recommending appropriate punishments for major offences, timing and conduct of prep and night classes; preservation of school property; regular class attendance and checking of wrong uniforms. 4. The students participated positively in schools’ plant planning in areas like clearing and sweeping of compounds, scrubbing of hostels, toilets and bathrooms and in purchasing of equipment, whereas they do not donate textbooks to the schools, repair school buildings and provision of portable water to the schools. 5. They were also involved in promoting school-community relations in the following areas: Preparing and conducting schools’ inter-house sports and giving reports about their academic performances to their parents.
