EFFECTS OF THOUGHT-STOPPING AND SELF-MONITORING TECHNIQUES ON THE ADJUSTMENT OF RESTIVE IN-SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS IN RIVERS STATE

ABSTRACT

In-school adolescents restiveness has led to a lot of unrest in Rivers state and the entire nation. To this effect, the study sought to investigate the effects of thought stopping and self-monitoring techniques on restive in-school adolescents’ in Rivers state. The study was guided by three research questions and five hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. A true-experimental design was adopted for the study. A total of 93 restive in-school adolescents found in log book of school guidance counsellors were used for the study. The instrument for data collection was 30 item questionnaire which was titled-Restive Adjustment Scale (RAS). The instrument was validated by three experts, all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded an estimated value of 0.87. The restive in-school adolescents in the three experimental groups were pretested with RAS before receiving appropriate treatments on thought-stopping and self-monitoring techniques. After the treatments, RAS was re-administered on both groups as post test. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the three research questions generated while Analysis of Covariance, (ANCOVA) was used to test the five hypotheses posed. It was found that: there was no significant difference in the effects of treatment using thought stopping and self-monitoring techniques on restive in-school adolescents. However, the two treatment groups had better adjustment as shown by their pre-test post-test mean differences. Also, location had no significant influence on the adjustment of restive in-school adolescents. However, gender had a significant influence on the adjustment of restive in-school adolescents. It was recommended that curriculum planners, educational psychologists and school guidance counsellors should plan a programme of intervention based on the principles for restive in-school adolescents; and the Federal and State Ministries of Education should organize and sponsor workshops and seminars for educational psychologists and school guidance counsellors on how to implement thought stopping and self-monitoring techniques.
