EFFECT OF MANDATORY AUDIT FIRM ROTATION ON AUDITOR INDEPENDENCE, AUDIT QUALITY AND INVESTORS’ CONFIDENCE (A SURVEY OF SELECTED STATES IN SOUTH-EAST, NIGERIA)..

ABSTRACT

The study examined effect of mandatory audit firm rotation on auditor independence, audit quality and investors’ confidence in selected states in south east, Nigeria. Recently, the financial reporting system has been under scrutiny as regulators and policy makers around the world examine lessons from the financial crisis and consider improvements to better protect investors. It is argued that audit quality diminishes with long audit tenure and that mandatory audit firm rotation will reduce familiarity threat, ensure auditors independence, and provide a greater skepticism and a fresh perspective that may be lacking in long-standing auditor client relationships. The objective of the study is to determine the relationship between mandatory audit firm rotation and auditors independence, ascertain the effects of mandatory audit firm rotation on audit quality, and ascertain the extent to which mandatory audit firm rotation strengthens Nigerian investors’ confidence. The survey design was adopted for this study. The area of study was south-east Nigeria, specifically Anambra and Enugu states. The population comprised Audit/Accounting Professionals and Nigerian Investors from an infinite population of which the sample size formula for infinite population (Godden, 2004) was used to arrive at a representative number of respondents being three hundred and twenty three. Based on the researcher’s judgement, one hundred and twenty three copies of the questionnaire were distributed to Audit/Accounting Professionals, while two hundred copies were distributed to Nigerian investors. Primary data with the use of questionnaires were retrieved using the 5 point Likert scale. Regression and ANOVA test statistics was used to test the three hypotheses of study. Findings of the research showed that; there is a significant relationship between Mandatory Audit Firm Rotation and Auditors Independence in Nigeria.
