EFFECT OF AUDIO-TAPED INSTRUCTION ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND INTEREST IN FRENCH LANGUAGE LISTENING COMPREHENSION IN ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL

ABSTRACT

This study is based on the fact that there has been consistent evidence of poor achievement of students in French Language in Nigeria. The Chief Examiner’s Report of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for 2009 provides one of such evidence. Because of the global importance of French language, and the relevance of the language in the regional affairs in West Africa, this problem of poor achievement has continued to draw the attention of researchers and policy makers in Nigeria. In the views of some authors, the poor achievement may be because the students have no interest in the language. Some others argue that students’lack of interest in the language may be because they have poor comprehension of the language. Still others add that if poor comprehension is the problem, it could be as a result of the method of teaching used by French language teachers. This is most likely because conventional method of teaching involves rote learning where the teacher is the one talking most of the time and students sit passively watching and learning vocabularies. Because of the above problems and considerations, the main purpose of the study was to determine the effect of audio cassette on the listening comprehension of students in the French language class. To achieve the above aim, four research questions were raised, and four research hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised all the senior secondary school one (SSI) students of French language in the co-educational government senior secondary schools in the Municipal Area Council of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. The simple random sampling technique (balloting) was used to select two hundred and sixty (260) SS1 French language students as the sample for the study. Two instruments [French Language Listening Comprehension Achievement Test (FLLCAT) and French Language Interest Inventory (FLII)] were used to collect data for this study. Data from the instruments were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation (to answer the research questions), and the Analysis of Co-variance (ANCOVA) (to test the hypotheses). The analysis of the data collected revealed that: (i) the use of audio-taped instruction to teach French language listening comprehension had greater effect on the students’ listening comprehension than the conventional lecture method of teaching; (ii) there are differences in the effect of the use of audio-taped instruction on the mean achievement of male and female students. The findings show that the female students gained less mean achievement scores than the male students; (iii) the use of audio-taped instruction to teach French language listening comprehension had no effect on the students’ interest in French language listening comprehension; and (iv) there wasinteraction effect of gender and teaching method on students’ mean interest scores in French language listening comprehension. More specifically, the study showed that the male students showed more interest than the female students.
