COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF GRAMMAR TRANSLATION AND COMMUNICATIVE METHODS ON STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to investigate the effect of grammar-translation and communicative methods on the performance of senior secondary school students in English Language in Nsukka Education Zone. Two schools, both co-educational schools and in the urban area of Nsukka Education Zone, were randomly selected for the study. From the two schools, 270 students in SS II were randomly selected comprising 123 boys and 147 girls. In one of the schools, 55 boys and 80 girls were selected, and in the other school 67 boys and 68 girls were selected. Twenty-five sentences were designed, validated, and administered on the 270 students used for the study. The students’ responses were collected and marked. The data collected were used to answer the three research questions that guided the study and to test the three null hypotheses of the study. While mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, Z score and Anova were used to test the hypotheses. The result revealed that student performance was traceable to the type of method used. Most of the students taught using the communicative method had high scores unlike those taught using the grammar-translation method. Gender did not really affect performance. In the control group, thirty nine (39) out of sixty-seven (67) boys used for the research scored half of the maximum score and above. Then forty (40) of the sixty-eight (68) girls used for the research scored half of the maximum score and above. But in the experimental group, the fifty-five (55) boys used for the research scored half of the maximum score and above. Then, seventy-nine (79) out of the eighty (80) girls used for the research scored half of the maximum score and above. The maximum score is 50. The boys and girls taught using the communicative method did better than those taught using the grammar-translation method. So, gender agreed with method in students performance.
