ASSESSMENT OF FUNDING OF SECONDARY EDUCATION IN ANKPA EDUCATION ZONE OF KOGI STATE

ABSTRACT 

This study was carried out to assess the funding of secondary education in Ankpa Education zone of Kogi State. It adopted a descriptive survey design. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study covered 112 government secondary school principals and parents Association chairmen which comprises of 56 principals and 56 parents Association chairmen in the three Local Government Areas in Ankpa Education zone. The population size (112) was manageable by the researcher so there was no sample and sampling technique. A self-developed instrument containing 28 items titled Assessment of Funding Secondary Education Questionnaire (AFSEQ) was used for data collection. The data generated from the trial testing were analyzed using Cronbach Alpha statistics and the overall reliability index of 0.83 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test was used to analyze the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that funds from ministry of education, federal government grants, parents Association contributions, examination fees are sources of funding secondary education in the zone. Finding also revealed that inaccurate statistical data, method of disbursement of fund, inconsistency policy on secondary education programmes among others affect funding secondary education programme. Equally, the results showed that increasing of funds allocation to secondary school programme, provision of accurate statistics data of students in the school, missionary increasing their fund to schools and training of principals in the management of school financial records among others are ways to improve funding secondary education. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that Federal and State ministries of education, their agencies and parastatal should ensure that there are adequate statistical data in their offices. It was concluded among others that if secondary education is well funded, it laudable and lofty objectives would be achieved towards national development.
