ABSTRACT
Care and support are valuable services that members in HIV/AIDS support groups receive which comprises of medical, psychological, socio-economic, nutritional, and legal from the government, non-governmental organizations, faith based organizations and community based organizations. The study is on “Access to care services by members in HIV/AIDS support groups in Enugu-state”. The questionnaire and the in-depth interview guide were used as the instruments for collection of data from 562 respondents. The quantitative data were analyzed using version 20 of the statistical package for social science (SPSS) and frequency distribution tables and percentages (%), pie-chats and bar-charts were used to present the results. Chi-square (x2) was used to test the three hypotheses adopted for the study. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to predict the effect of independent variables on a dependent variable while the qualitative data collected was analyzed in themes as complement to the quantitative data. Substantive hypothesis one was rejected, while the null hypothesis was upheld. Substantive hypothesis two was accepted, while the null hypothesis was rejected. The last and third substantive hypothesis was upheld, while the null hypothesis was rejected. The findings from the regression analysis showed that sex, marital status and place of residence were the predictors of access to care services, while age, level of education and level of income were found to have no relationship with access to care services. The findings from this study have clear implications for social policy and social work practice in Nigeria. It is recommended that these members in HIV/AIDS support groups should be empowered financially most directly to their support groups to curb embezzlement of funds. This empowerment should be in form of stipends especially for the “unemployed” which had a very high percentage in this study. Also, a sense of commitment on the part of government and other stake holders is highly recommended in improving the lives of these members in HIV/AIDS support groups
